WCU Opera - Shelton Laurel

A new work that explores the unique and tragic hardships faced by early settlers of Western North Carolina. Set in rural Madison County, this opera is a powerful account of families torn apart by fear, mistrust, and violence. Inspired by the poetry and prose of Ron Rash and based in part on true events, Shelton Laurel gives voice to a forgotten chapter of Appalachian Civil War history. With music and libretto by WCU Professor Damon Sink, Shelton Laurel is a haunting meditation on loyalty, survival, and the brutal consequences of civil conflict.
